AAA Turnkey Distracted Driving Event

$0.00

Host an event to raise awareness of the epidemic of distracted driving with a complete set-up from AAA Oklahoma and enlist those in your school and/or community to take the pledge to not drive distracted. Share information on the problem and tips to avoid it. Here are the steps:

  1. Determine date, time and location for event. Select a well-attended local, public event (such as athletic event, festival, etc.) or host an event at your school for students and staff. You will need an 8’ table and weather-sheltered location. (Outside is fine if the wind isn’t gusty.)

  2. Check with AAA Oklahoma representative to reserve exhibit booth tools on selected date and coordinate handoff of items.

  3. Pre-promote the event with flyers and content provided by AAA Oklahoma via announcements, social media, newspaper articles, radio interviews, etc. You’ll need to make any necessary contacts to help with this at least 2 weeks before the event.

  4. On the day of the event, set up the table and cover it with the provided tablecloth and materials. Use the provided pull-up banner as a conversation starter and position it by the table.

  5. Provide those staffing the booth with talking points and practice these with each other to get comfortable.

  6. When the event starts, ask those in the vicinity to come take the pledge to not drive distracted. Explain what “intexticated” is and how texting and driving is causing as many wrecks these days as drunk (or “intoxicated”) driving. Provide those signing the pledge cards with reminder car air fresheners with the Don’t Drive Intexticated message on them. IMPORTANT: For Oklahoma Challenge points credit for your chapter, be SURE to have those completing the pledge cards to list your complete school name in the “In Honor Of” section. This is the only way you will be awarded points for number of pledges obtained.

  7. Have participants drop their pledge cards in the bucket provided. Keep track of these and return them to AAA with all other items.

  8. Share the story of two Oklahoma victims of a deadly distracted driving crash with the photos and talking points provided as an example of how real the problem is.

  9. Share the tip card on setting up their phone to automatically hold calls and texts while in motion in a vehicle and deliver a message to whomever is contacting them that they are driving and can’t respond but will get back to them when they stop. Show participants how to set this up on their phones and, if willing, assist them in setting it then.

  10. Take photos of your chapter members working at the event and engaging with participants. Share these with local newspapers and on social media. Also, provide these to Oklahoma Challenge to showcase your chapter’s efforts.

  11. When event is over, return all items to storage containers in which they were delivered.

  12. Contact the AAA Oklahoma representative to arrange to return all items.
