This year, we have again partnered with Cambridge Mobile Telematics, Inc. to provide a powerful tool in the form of a free app that reinforces safe driving behaviors after every drive, helping users become safer and better drivers. The DriveWell Go™ app automatically detects when driving starts and stops and uses a smartphone’s sensors to measure: Phone use, Speeding, Acceleration, Hard braking, Cornering, and Overall best.
At the end of each trip, the app shows the driver a trip summary and details on maneuvers and gives them useful feedback to help them become better drivers. If they were a passenger and not a driver for a trip, that can be fixed with the click of a button in the app. The top-ranked drivers appear on the leaderboard based on their average scores and total distance traveled. The leaderboard only displays the driver’s username and does not share driver names or any trip details. The Oklahoma Challenge uses the leaderboard to award the prizes.
Here is what we learned in past app contests:
ALL app users decreased risky driving behaviors while using the app. There was an 18% improvement in driving by the drivers who exhibited the most risk in the first three days of driving. Imagine how much safer our roads would be if every driver decreased their risky driving behaviors by even 18%.
Hard Braking - On average, users improved by 12.77%
Hard Turns - On average, users enhanced by 25.3%
Phone Use - On average, users enhanced by 10.58%
Speeding - On average, users enhanced by 10.47%
Hard Acceleration - On average, users enhanced by 28.08%
Tips for Parents!
Good news! You remain the biggest influencer of your young person’s attitudes and behaviors which means if you demonstrate safe driving behaviors it increases the likelihood that your young driver will too!
Join the DriveWell Go™ App too! And have all drivers in your family sign-up! Now the entire family can compare driving results and engage in meaningful conversations centered on safe driving.
Model the behaviors you want to see in your young driver! Put your own phone down, keep your eyes on the road, buckle up, and never text while driving! Your good habits will be reflected by your young driver!
Talk with your young driver about safe driving and set your expectations!
Download a promise for your young driver to sign.
Don’t call or text your teen while they are driving! Did you know that teens receive more phone calls from their parents than their friends? If you call or text your driver when you know they are driving, you may be putting pressure on them to answer. Establish a family practice that you all understand that everyone will wait to answer until they are not driving and in a safe place.
Turn on the Do Not Disturb While Driving feature on everyone’s phone! As a family, establish that this may be why someone doesn’t respond immediately. Here’s a video on how to set up this feature on your phone!
