Interactive Pedestrian Safety Classes
Interactive Pedestrian/Bike/Railroad Safety Class
Safe Kids Oklahoma
The bad news:
In 2020, we lost 86 Oklahoman’s that were struck by a vehicle and there were an additional 143 serious pedestrian injuries.
Every hour in the U.S. a teen is injured or killed by a vehicle while walking.
The good news:
Safe Kids Oklahoma (SKO) now has a designated Pedestrian & Bike Educator.
Age groups: Kindergarten thru 4th grade.
SKO will come to your school gym classes to teach. Depending on class size it will last 30—40 minutes. SKO will bring the props (Will need 60 minutes for set up & visit with volunteers).
Maximum class size: Two classes or approximately 44 kids.
SKO will spend a day at your school. Five to six volunteers will be needed throughout the day to assist with taking kids through the course. Volunteer group suggestions: FCCLA, National Honor Society, 4H, STUCCO or adult volunteers.
Exercises will be performed throughout the course, along with key safety messages.

If interested, please contact Megan Youell at: myouell@behanychildrens.org
More details:
Students will get moving during the class while they are learning important safety messages.
The class focuses on key safety points like plan your walk, never walk alone, walk with an adult (10 & under), Look Left, Right and Left again, never cross the street midblock, see the drivers eyes before crossing, wear something bright at night, etc. The class will also touch on railroad safety.
Older students (high school) can help lead groups of about 5 kids at a time through the course reinforcing safety tips. This is a great opportunity to work with younger kids and even learn to lead a pedestrian safety class (if they feel comfortable!)
