OKDOT Distractions Challenge
Distractions are everywhere you look! From your cell phone that you bring into the car, to rolling down your window, even the car crash you are driving past. Just about anything can be a distraction. But there are 4 main types of distractions while driving:
1. Inside and attached to the vehicle
Distractions inside and attached to the vehicle can be anything affiliated with the car itself. A few examples are the car stereo/radio, the door controls, the A/C controls, the built-in navigation system, etc.
2. Outside of the vehicle
Distractions that are outside of the vehicle are anything you see around you that take your focus off of driving. A few examples are street signs, billboards, car crashes, pedestrians, animals, etc.
3. What you bring into the vehicle
Distractions you bring into the vehicle can be anything you take along with you when you are driving. A few examples are your cell phone, laptops, books, food, drinks, even friends.
4. Day dreaming- Thoughts other than focusing on driving)
Daydreaming distractions are simply when you take your mind and focus off of driving and start thinking about other things. A few examples are what you friend talked to you about earlier, what you are going to eat when you get home, who you hope wins the game, etc.
We challenge you to point out some things that you might consider a distraction. While you are a PASSENGER ONLY in a vehicle, take pictures of examples of each one of the first 3 types of distractions. As for the 4th -the daydreaming distraction, take a selfie and draw a thought bubble of what types of thoughts might have you distracted while driving. Once you have a picture of all 4 distraction make a collage and post it to your Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #OKCHALLENGE and @OKDOT . Take a photo or screenshot of your initial post and then take a screenshot of how viral your post gets!
No pictures should be taken of the driver you are in the vehicle with. This challenge was not designed to distract the driver you are in the vehicle with.
Remember: Eyes on the Road, Hands on the Wheel! Knowing what the distractions of driving are can help you realize when you are getting distracted and remind yourself to FOCUS on the road!
